Class Schedule for Summer 2010

Geared towards the youngest of artists, this class cultivates cognitive development, small motor skills, and creative thinking. Little minds and hands will be kept busy with visual play, storytelling, and more.

Toddlers explore the world of visual arts! Young artists play while learning basic art concepts and terminology through 2- and 3-dimensional art projects. Classes foster cognitive development, small motor skills, and creative thinking.

This is the third age-appropriate curriculum level that encourages creative young minds and active hands. Child and caregiver will work both collaboratively and independently on a variety of stimulating projects. Participants will increase knowledge of basic art concepts and terminology.

Each week offers a different subject for camp goers. Some camps have all-day or half-day AM/PM time options available.  Curriculum will include different projects for morning and afternoon classes. Other camps are all-day only (see camps below for details). 

Camps are open to PreK (age 4) through sixth grade unless otherwise indicated. By design, curriculum is age appropriate (including mixed age camps). When larger enrollment dictates separate classes, students will be divided according to age, ability and interests.

Note: All students—bring a snack. Full-day students—bring lunch and two snacks. If preferred, ArtiCulture offers snacks for .75each.

Have fun creating a character and the costume to match! Then elaborate on your character’s personality and story then weave it into how it fits with the other zany characters created in this whimsical camp.

This camp is the creative answer to recycling! Give soda cans wings to fly, turn tees into rugs, and bottle caps into movable sculptures. Think twice before you throw that bottle away – and you thought it was just garbage!

Students will practice techniques, processes and creative tricks used to produce stories that successfully convey ideas, thoughts and feelings. Students will learn how to conceive, draw, ink, letter and ultimately create unique cartoons and comic series. Stop motion clay animation (claymation) will also bring this fun camp to new heights a movie debut at the end of the week.

What do nature and science have to do with art? Everything! Artists often find inspiration from the world around us. Exploring natural patterns, shapes, colors and more will be motivation enough for creativity in this fun camp.

Participants in this camp will travel to far off places. While visiting the continents, experience the arts and cultures of distant lands. In one creatively packed week travel the world and be filled with wonderfully different and artistic ideas.

Paper is one of the most versatile and widely used art materials. Learn of it’s interesting history and how it evolved. Then get creative and cut, tear, fold, glue, construct artist books and even make ... paper!

Your cat strikes a perfect pose and the dog is just too cute. Learn techniques to draw creatures who are often in motion. This camp is ideal for those who love both animals and art. Class visits by various animal friends throughout the week will be arranged.

Note: If possible, a mid-week field trip to Como Zoo will be arranged.

Let’s make puppets such as finger, hand, shadow, or string. Use your puppet making knowledge to then create your very own muppet and even turn yourself into one big puppet yourself with a full-body makeover!

Once again we’re having ArtiCulture’s Art Car team! We will use a donated car as a blank canvas for young artists with a vision.Participants will conceptualize and present their idea to the car owner for approval, then drive into action to create a mobile masterpiece. The grand finale will be class participation in the Art Car Parade Saturday, July 24.

Explore the work of prominent artists who spearheaded art movements with their originality. Observe how their artwork, at the time, was new and different. Let’s pick up where they left off with your own innovative creativity.

Printmaking is magical when using a variety of techniques and materials from one-of-a-kind monoprints and colligraphs to foam cuts and carved images to create multiple images. Experimenting with our vintage printing press is an added bonus.

Green your personal planet. Spend mornings at Northern Clay Center making clay cups, mugs and plates on the potters wheel. Then spend afternoons at ArtiCulture finding unusual ways to use renewable and recycled materials to create unique “green” works of art.

This is the enchanted week for myth and lore! This is where trolls and pixies look for trouble; phoenix, griffins and dragons fill the skies while a world of elves and fairies, wizards and unicorns rule the land.

Come to this fun camp and learn about camera obscura, trompe l’oeil, optical illusions and more... Find out how artists take advantage of using tricks to fool the eye. Students will learn techniques to create some artistic tricks of their own.

YUM!  Back by popular demand – where art becomes food and food becomes art. Mornings will at ArtiCulture will have creating “foodworks” with a variety of non-food materials. Afternoon classes will take place a block away at the kitchen classroom of the Seward Co-op. Using local foods when possible, participants will chop, measure, stir, bake and cook to their hearts’ and stomachs’ desire.

Cultures have always created various games to play, strategize with and to just have plain fun. Join us for an exciting week of designing, creating and playing new games along with some zany outdoor entertainment.

Pets rise-up and decide the humans have done enough damage in the world and it’s their turn to make the earth a better place. The humans are shocked and amazed and do everything to stop the changes coming their way. Do the animals take over, do the humans let them or fight back or ... Join the fun and help decide what happens! Students create a story and all visuals for the play.

Note: This class fills quickly.  There will be an end of the week performance debut.

Discover ways to bring art into your community, WITHOUT destroying public property. Explore the history of street and graffiti artists, and various forms such as stenciling and tagging. Discuss and create ways to mimic these arts in environmentally friendly ways to bring your own message into the community—leave around small treasures, learn how planting seeds in unusual places can bring a smile, and learn how to create your own persona.

This summer intensive is for students who truly love to immerse themselves in art making. This class will help refine technical drawingand painting skills – use of line, shade, color, perspective, proportions, and composition will be discussed. Interests such as printmaking or artist books or experimentation with a variety of art materials will also be explored.

Learn basic technical skills if just starting out - such as observation, perspective, shadowing, and composition. For the more advanced student - expand your knowledge base. Benefit from individual guidance through a variety of skill-building projects, or purely enjoy a creative support system. All skill levels are welcome from beginning to advanced in dry or water based media.

Note: Bring desired supplies or materials to purchase will be discussed first class. 

Capture the urban landscape from coffee bars and skylines to parks and gardens. Instruction will be in the form of insights, advice and assistance with problem solving, technical help, and issues of “seeing” and composition. Supply choices for mobility will be discussed.

Note: Beginning Drawing or equivalent recommended. Bring desired supplies for easy transport. Meet at ArtiCulture first day.

Ever tried painting and felt lost? You are delving into one of the more difficult of arts media-but don’t be discouraged-we can help! Come to this class for guidance with technical skills and gain insights that will help you to find that water media is very versatile and gratifying.

Note: No prerequisites necessary. Supplies may be purchased on location or bring what you have—a list will be provided first class.

Note: Life Drawing Cooperative will resume in the fall. 

Learn the age-old process of papermaking while being green through recycling paper, fibers and botanicals. Participants will learn the basics from pulpmaking and pulling paper sheets to the creative stage of designing beautifully textured cards, stationary, artist books or journals for personal use or wonderful gifts.

Learn about exceptionally creative and meaningful ways to bring arts education into your class curriculum. We will discuss child development in relation to creativity and the importance of allowing children to find their own path through the “process” of art making. Leave with concrete ways to infuse arts into learning, to enhance the quality of your students educational experiences.
